Check an arXiv citation
An arXiv id is a real identifier for a preprint. It is not a DOI, and it is not proof that a conference or journal later published that paper. Cite the version you used, and check that the id, title, and authors belong together.
What gets sent to arXiv
RefCheck does not send every reference to arXiv. It queries arXiv when the line contains an arXiv id, and when a preprint-like reference is still unresolved after the first pass. The lookup goes through the site’s lookup API, which caches successful responses. Crossref and OpenAlex still run, because many preprints later receive a DOI.
Paste the id in the form arXiv:2401.00001 or as a bare number with a version, plus the title and authors if you have them. A match on the id with a different title is a mismatch, not a pass. Invented ids are simply absent.
Preprint and published version
The published version can have a different title, a different year, and a DOI the preprint did not have. If both records exist, do not assume they are interchangeable. The corrected citation shows the record that was matched. If you read the preprint, cite the preprint. If you read the journal article, cite the article. RefCheck will not decide that for you.
Computer-science lines can also hit DBLP, which often lists both the preprint and the conference paper. See the IEEE citation checker when the entry is shaped like a proceedings reference that happens to mention arXiv.
What an arXiv hit does not include
arXiv is a distribution service. A hit does not mean the paper was peer reviewed, and a miss does not mean the idea is false. Withdrawal notices live on arXiv; RefCheck’s retraction flags for journal versions still come from Crossref, PubMed, and Europe PMC, not from a separate reading of arXiv comments.
If you have a DOI instead of an arXiv id, use verify a DOI. The two identifiers should not be pasted as if they were the same string.
Typical cases
The id exists and the title does not
Someone attached a real arXiv id to a different paper’s title. That is a mismatch. Use the title on the arXiv record, or delete the line.
You cited 2023 for a 2024 preprint
Preprint dates and publication dates diverge. “Real with errors” is the expected verdict when the work is real and the year is not.
No id, only “arXiv preprint”
The word arXiv is not an identifier. Add the number. Otherwise the search falls back to the title, and a generic title will stay unconfirmed.
How it works
Three steps for this kind of reference
01PasteOne reference per line, or a numbered list. Keep the authors, title, year, and the DOI or arXiv id if you have them.
02Cross-checkAn arXiv id is looked up on arXiv. Crossref and OpenAlex still run so a later published version is not invisible.
03Read the verdictReal, real with errors, likely fabricated, or unconfirmed. A corrected citation is shown when the record disagrees, and a retraction is flagged when one is on record.
Frequently asked questions
Is an arXiv id a DOI?
No. Some preprints also get a DOI, and many have only the arXiv id. RefCheck accepts either, and they are looked up in different places.
Does every reference get an arXiv query?
No. arXiv is queried for lines with an arXiv id, and for unresolved preprint-like references. Other lines are not sent there.
Does a match mean the paper was peer reviewed?
No. It means the preprint record was found. Peer review, if it happened, is a property of the journal or conference version.
Can I check the published version and the preprint together?
Paste them as two references if you cite both. Do not merge the arXiv id and the journal DOI into one line and expect a single clean record.
What does a check cost?
3 free reference checks without an account, plus 5 more free after you sign in. Then each reference costs 1 AILatest credit. Failed lookups are refunded. Credits last 1 year and the expiry extends on every top-up. Packs are $1.99 for 200, $4.99 for 600, and $9.99 for 1,500. There is no subscription.
